Clients are seen by appointment. For the safety and comfort of all clients and pets, we ask that dogs be on leads, and that most cats, all birds, rabbits, rodents, reptiles and exotic pets be appropriately caged. Be sure that reptiles are always transported with a source of heat. Please telephone with any questions.
We offer medical, surgical and hospital facilities for the sick pet. In-house diagnostic facilities include a new digital radiograph machine(X-rays) and blood analysis. We also offer acupuncture & chiropractic service with Dr.Ilija Lukic. The Sidney Animal Hospital has three examination rooms to accommodate the many services offered at our hospital. Birds, rabbits and other exotic pets are seen in one of the rooms, where special equipment for these animals can be kept close at hand. We recommend annual well-pet examinations for all pets, including birds, reptiles, rabbits and rodents. See our client hand outs for more information.
Most medications commonly prescribed will be dispensed at the time of the visit. Only occasionally is there a need to call out a prescription to a pharmacy. For unusual prescriptions, or for animals which are particularly small or difficult to treat, we make use of a specialist Compounding Pharmacy. If you know that your pet will need a refill of his or her medication, we can usually make up the prescription in advance of your visit. Please understand that even for chronic or longstanding conditions, it will be necessary to see the animal annually or semi-annually before medication can be prescribed.
In April 2003 the Sidney Animal Hospital bought an ultrasound machine. This is a new piece of equipment, designed specifically for veterinary use. Ultrasound is an important tool in the diagnosis and monitoring of several disease conditions. It is also useful in confirming pregnancy at an early stage. Please contact us for further information.
The Treatment Room is the centre of our busy practice. Here animals are monitored as they recover from anaesthesia. This is where minor procedures not requiring anaesthesia take place and where our in house laboratory equipment is located. We offer in house blood testing, faecal analysis, urinalysis, microscopy and some cytology (the study of tissue cells). While some tests must still be performed at outside laboratories, our technician's skill and blood analysis equipment allow us to get results as quickly as possible for most routine analyses. The importance of this is clear in the case of a sick pet, but the advantages of in house testing also include monitoring heat cycles prior to breeding a bitch and initial assessment of tissue or cell samples before results are available from a pathologist.
Radiology plays an important role in veterinary medicine. In addition to their diagnostic role in the care of sick animals, we use radiographs (X-rays) as part of a pre-whelping assessment of bitches, and to assess hip and elbow conformation of breeding dogs. Radiographs may be sent for certification both to OFA (Orthopedic Foundation For Animals) and to the University of Guelph, among other screening centres. We can arrange evaluation of radiographs at the centre of your choice
Routine surgeries, spays, neuters, and dental scaling and polishing can usually be scheduled with a few days notice. Orthopaedic and urgent or emergency procedures are carried out as necessary.
